Leading through the AI endgame

leading-through-the-AI-endgame

Leading through the AI endgame explores three AI Future scenarios and seven stages of transformation.

Most leaders are asking the wrong AI question.
They are asking: “Which AI future is coming?”

That matters, of course.
But I think the deeper question is: “Can we lead people through whichever future arrives?”

Because here is what worries me.

A lot of people are thinking about where AI might be heading.

Some are imagining abundance.
Some are warning about disruption.
Some are worried about human obsolescence.

But almost no one is seriously considering how we move through whatever scenario actually takes place.

And that is where leadership will either hold or break.

AI will not arrive neatly as a technology upgrade.

It will move through our organisations, economies, and communities more like a deep transition.

There will be a shock.
Then confusion.
Then sorting.
Then the slow work of rebuilding.

In the work behind these infographics, I explore three possible AI futures:

1. Harmonious Integration
A future where AI becomes broadly accessible, human-centred, and used to expand creativity, care, and abundance.

2. Turbulent Struggle
A future marked by disruption, backlash, uneven access, job displacement, mistrust, and a hard-won settlement.

3. Post-Human Dawn
A darker future where power concentrates, human agency shrinks, and many people become economically or socially marginal.

None of these futures is guaranteed.

And different parts of the world — and even different parts of the same organisation — may experience different versions at the same time.

That is why I believe leaders need more than AI awareness.

→ They need transition literacy.

→ They need to understand the seven stages people and systems tend to move through when the old order breaks and a new one starts forming:

1. The Burning
2. The Dissolving
3. The Sorting
4. The Weaving
5. The Surrender
6. The Essence
7. The Flight

These stages are not a neat checklist.

They overlap.
They repeat.
They can feel messy while you are inside them.

But they give leaders a map.

And in a period where people are anxious about jobs, truth, meaning, identity, trust, and control, a map matters.

The leadership task is not simply to predict the future.

It is to help people move through it with judgment, dignity, and enough clarity to keep shaping the outcome.

I’ve created this 3-part infographic series to make this framework easier to explore:

  • The three AI future scenarios
  • The seven stages of transformation
  • How each scenario may move through those stages

My hope is that it helps leaders pause, look past the noise, and ask a more useful question:
Not just “What will AI do to us?”
But “How will we choose to move through what AI changes?”
